Founded in the 1565, long before the Pilgrims
embarked upon their fateful journey across the
Atlantic, St. Augustine is the oldest city in
the United States. Because it has been around
for almost five centuries, St. Augustine is one
of the most historically rich cities in our
young country. Many of those who visit our
St
Augustine FL Bed and Breakfast enjoy learning
about the city’s heritage by attending
St
Augustine Tours that tell of the city’s long
history, its supposed spectral inhabitants, and
its fascinating culture. Visitors also learn
about St. Augustine’s heritage by admiring
its architecture and exploring the many
historical sites that are scattered throughout
the Old City. Magnificent structures such as the
Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Matanzas, the
Cathedral Basilica, and The Oldest House tell
the story of St. Augustine’s often tumultuous
past, but one structure in particular, the
Castle Otttis, tells a very different story.
Completed in 1988, the Castle Otttis is a
relatively new building by St. Augustine’s
standards. Its appearance, however, leads
visitors to believe exactly the opposite. The
Castle Otttis is a visual representation of what
its builders—two lone individuals working
together over a period of four years—believed a
1,000-year-old Irish castle would have looked
like. This privately owned structure was built
in homage of Jesus Christ, and was never
intended to be a private residence or house
commercial enterprises of any kind. Today, it is
home to an interdenominational worship service
each Sunday, and can be booked by schools,
churches, and other groups who are interested in
utilizing its many square feet of space for
their various functions.
The Castle Otttis is also a popular
Wedding
Venue in St Augustine, and has been the site of
many a Castle St. Augustine Florida Wedding.
This imposing edifice hearkens back to the
1000s, and is a stark contrast to the warm,
tropical atmosphere of St. Augustine. It was
constructed using a mixture of concrete and
steel and is estimated to weigh at least 7
million pounds. During a Castle Otttis Wedding,
guests can occupy the structure’s benches and
pews while admiring the eight different stair
cases and other gorgeous architectural features
that have been skillfully crafted by a lone
woodworker out of mostly reclaimed cypress and
pine. The interior boasts a modest beauty and,
because there is no glass in any of the Castle’s
eighty-eight windows, it is completely exposed
to the elements.
St. Augustine is a place where the past and the
present converge, and it is only fitting that
couples would want to exchange vows in a
structure that fully exemplifies the spirit of
the Old City—albeit in a somewhat unusual way. A
Castle St. Augustine FL Wedding is one that
won’t soon be forgotten by friends and family,
and the St. Augustine Castle is the perfect
